DISABLED DRIVERS SCHOLARSHIP

The 2026 Scholarship Assessment day was held on 29th May 26 at Coalville Rugby Club.

The event brought together nine enthusiastic drivers, each eager to demonstrate their skills behind the wheel of the Loughborough Car Club StreetCar. From the very first run, the standard of driving was exceptional, with every participant showing determination, commitment and a real passion for grassroots motorsport.

The course provided the perfect challenge, testing precision, car control and consistency. Throughout the day, drivers tackled the course designed to assess not only speed, but also smoothness, awareness and adaptability. It was fantastic to see confidence grow with every run, with competitors encouraging one another and creating a friendly, supportive atmosphere that trulyreflected the spirit of club motorsport.

The judging panel had an incredibly difficult task. All nine drivers performed brilliantly and should be proud of what they achieved. The standard was so high that selecting the final scholarship recipients was far from easy.

Unfortunately, with only two places available to drive the Loughborough Car Club's Disabled Driver Scholarship car, a difficult decision had to be made. After careful consideration, two drivers were selected based on their overall performance, potential and commitment shown throughout the day.

This years scholars will be Ryan and Cameron. Many congratulations to you both and commiserations to the other candidates.

To everyone who took part, thank you for making the event such a success. Your enthusiasm, sportsmanship and positive attitude made the day memorable for all involved. We hope this experience is just the beginning of your motorsport journey, and we look forward to seeing all of you competing and enjoying the sport in the future. A huge thank you also goes to Coalville Rugby Club for hosting us, to the volunteers and organisers who made the event possible, and to Motorsport UK and Loughborough Car Club for their continued support in creating opportunities for disabled drivers to get involved in motorsport.

It was a day full of smiles, great driving and genuine passion for the sport—everything that grassroots motorsport is all about.

The Loughborough Car Club Disabled Driver Scholarship, run in partnership with Motorsport UK, is a unique programme designed to make grassroots motorsport accessible to disabled participants. Launched in 2010, the initiative has recently expanded under the StreetCar banner to reach a national audience.

Scholarship Overview

The programme provides successful applicants with a fully funded year of club motorsport. This typically includes:

  • A Competition Vehicle: Access to a specially adapted car, such as a Toyota Yaris or Nissan Micra, equipped with hand controls and other necessary modifications.

  • Covered Costs: All entry fees, fuel, maintenance, and tyres for the season are provided by the club and its partners.

  • Event Access: Participation in a series of AutoSOLO and Autotest events—low-speed precision driving tests held on tarmac or grass.

  • Mentorship: Guidance and mechanical support from experienced club members and volunteers.

Selection and Eligibility

  • Who can apply: Applicants must be aged 14 or over and able to control a vehicle using the available adaptations. A standard driving licence is often not required for these off-road club events.

  • The Assessment: Candidates attend an assessment day where they are judged by a panel. Importantly, selection is not based on speed or previous racing experience; instead, judges look for commitment, a positive attitude, and potential for progression.

  • Location: While the scholarship has expanded, the main assessment days and core events are often held in the Loughborough and Midlands area.

Disabled Drivers Scholarship assessment days are nearly here - don’t miss out.

“This is where it started for me.”

From first opportunity to competing and exploring new sides of the sport, the scholarship is helping disabled drivers take their place in motorsport.
