Disabled Drivers Scholarship

The Loughborough Car Club Disabled Driver Scholarship, run in partnership with Motorsport UK, is a unique programme designed to make grassroots motorsport accessible to disabled participants. Launched in 2010, the initiative has recently expanded under the StreetCar banner to reach a national audience.

Scholarship Overview

The programme provides successful applicants with a fully funded year of club motorsport. This typically includes:

A Competition Vehicle: Access to a specially adapted car, such as a Toyota Yaris or Nissan Micra, equipped with hand controls and other necessary modifications.
Covered Costs: All entry fees, fuel, maintenance, and tyres for the season are provided by the club and its partners.
Event Access: Participation in a series of AutoSOLO and Autotest events—low-speed precision driving tests held on tarmac or grass.
Mentorship: Guidance and mechanical support from experienced club members and volunteers.

Selection and Eligibility

Who can apply: Applicants must be aged 14 or over and able to control a vehicle using the available adaptations. A standard driving licence is often not required for these off-road club events.
The Assessment: Candidates attend an assessment day where they are judged by a panel. Importantly, selection is not based on speed or previous racing experience; instead, judges look for commitment, a positive attitude, and potential for progression.
Location: While the scholarship has expanded, the main assessment days and core events are often held in the Loughborough and Midlands area.
